The Norwegian tech market is yours if you want it

27 nov 2022 by Maria Kotaniemi

We are experiencing a shortage of competence and developers to drive the Norwegian tech scene forward. There has been a boost in government support towards the tech industry and companies want to digitize their business. Regardless of your favored technologies and frameworks, Norway is in dire need of developers. Maybe you will find your dream project here?

Talented has helped hundreds of developers find their dream projects. Read about Christoffer who took the leap from Finland to Norway.

Why the great demand?

In light of the pandemic and stronger government support, Norway´s IT industry is growing up. “Two years ago, I would say the Norwegian tech scene was in its infancy”, says Isaac Gray, CTO of Talented Norway. But now companies are realizing the potential in tech and digital products, and with it comes a need for new influences and competence across multiple categories.

“The whole economy is reorienting towards more digital solutions, both in startups and traditional businesses. Companies are all about digitizing these days and this creates a huge demand for people to develop the interfaces needed for all this”, Isaac adds.

This is also why the demand for frontend and fullstack React developers is huge. Fullstack and backend Java developers, DevOps, data scientists, and cloud architects are also highly sought after by Norwegian companies in all sectors. React is the dominant Javascript framework in Norway, with Angular and Vue also being used in some companies.

Making the move?

We know the process of moving to a new country rarely is seamless and may seem daunting, but at the end lies an opportunity for something new and exciting. And when you do choose Norway for your next career adventure, Talented can help you through the process and point you in the right direction.

The process differs somewhat for EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA citizens, but we have summed it up for you:

EU/EEA citizens

If you are an EU or EEA citizen and want to move to Norway for work, you can come to the country and stay for six months before you have to get a job offer. When you get here you have to make an appointment with the police or a service center for workers and bring your national ID. Should you be one of the lucky ones that already have a job, or one lined up, you can start working right away, but do not forget to register your arrival before three months have passed since entering.

To actually get paid when you start working, you need a d-number, an identity number every person living in Norway needs who do not have a Norwegian social security number . If your intentions are to stay for more than six months, you can apply for a social security number. Both kinds can be obtained via Norway’s tax authorities.

You can bring your family with you when moving, but they also have to register their arrival with the police. After you have been living in Norway for five years, you can be granted permanent right of residence.

Non-EU/EEA citizens

If you hold citizenship outside the EU you first need a residency permit to stay in Norway for longer than 90 days. You will also have to pay an application fee for the residency permit. You need to find out what kind of residency permit you need (worker, studies, etc), which in this case should be a skilled worker permit.

You then need to get your identity number. Same as for EU citizens you must contact the tax authorities to register yourself as a worker in Norway and then receive the number. Either a d-number (if you are to stay shorter than six months) or a social security number.
